2006, Learn to Give Value First!
By Ron Tanner

It was 22 degrees above zero on Sunday evening, December 18th.  A formidable group of volunteers from the North Alton/Godfrey Business Association had gathered at a local park. At 5:00 pm, we would see that the park would be transformed into a Christmas Wonderland, a remarkable display of Holiday lights and decorated Christmas trees.

What's the big deal?  Well, this was my first time volunteering for this event.  I didn't feel like spending 4+ hours in the cold, and I needed to prepare for Monday morning meetings.  I had no idea what showing up for that "short" session would mean to me.

First of all, the display's popularity attracts people by the bus loads from miles around to take the 20-40 minute tour, visit Santa, and vote for the most beautifully decorated trees.  The entire event is benefits charities throughout the area.  It's important, real important!  If we don't show up, the park can't open, and hundreds of parents and children will be deprived of a meaningful holiday experience. I had forgotten the impact of volunteering.

Secondly, it was very cold, and I was teamed with Glenda and Ken who own a custom framing shop in town.  They recently framed a beautiful print for my wife and me.  So we had something in common, but 4 hours is a long time.  What would we talk about for 4 hours?  As it turned out, many, many, many things. It wasn't a chore, but an opportunity.

Third,
we were busy collecting all of the ballots from some 359 car, van, and bus loads of people who toured the overwhelming presentation in just 4 hours.  What amazed me was how many starry-eyed children and parents told me "Thank you, it's just beautiful!"
